My Profile

Emma Faye Russell | Journalist

As a person who has always been interested in current events, life in Los Angeles, and understanding the dynamics of communicating through different mediums, choosing to major in journalism as a rising sophomore was one of the easiest, best decisions I have ever made. I recall finding American YouTuber Philip DeFranco in middle school, host of The Philip DeFranco Show, a news commentary program that covers pop culture and political issues of the previous day. Having watched many episodes through high school and into college, I realized that my interests were not extraordinary. Having completed my first year as a transfer student into my 3rd semester at Loyola Marymount University, I can say with confidence that my true passion is spreading knowledge to those around me. Since transferring to LMU with the declared journalism major, I’ve attended the 2024 Broadcast Education Association conference in Las Vegas as a recipient of the “RAB Student Scholar” award, taken workshops on writing pieces, and joined LMU’s award-winning student-run newspaper, The Los Angeles Loyolan – promoted from Audio/Podcasting Intern to Audio Producer, skipping the assistant position. My goals extend beyond simply being a reporter; I want to learn to produce insightful, hard-hitting pieces on current affairs for broadcast, podcasts, and print. I’m determined to contribute to a media conversation that is more equitable and inclusive, and I see myself assuming leadership positions where I can have an impact on both the stories we tell and the ways in which we tell them.

Article: “Peter O’Malley: The Dodgers’ Man” Emma Russell May 2024

(2000-word article with Peter O’Malley, the previous owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers)

“From the pitcher’s mound to the boardroom, Peter O’Malley hit it out of the park. As the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1970 to 1998, he carried on the legacy of his father, Walter O’Malley, preserving the history of one of baseball’s most iconic teams. Under O’Malley’s leadership, the Dodgers won five National League titles and two World Series, while also bringing a global vision to the game.”
